DIMENSIONAL RANGE:
This doesn’t apply in the classic NPS/DN or Class/PN sense, since ISO 9712 certifies people rather than components. The real “scope” here is defined by three axes instead: the NDT method (RT, UT, MT, PT, VT, ET, and so on), the competence level (1, 2 or 3), and the industry sector or product-type endorsement (welds, castings, forgings, wrought products, etc.) that the certificate is limited to. We treat that three-axis scope as the equivalent boundary condition, and we check all three before accepting a certificate as valid for a specific inspection task.

Level 1 performs tests per written instructions, Level 2 sets up and interprets tests and writes reports, Level 3 develops procedures and provides technical authority for disputes. Before accepting any inspection report on a project, We check that the signing technician’s certificate level actually matches the responsibility they’re claiming; Level 2 minimum for sentencing welds is the practical baseline we use.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Certification is method- and sector-specific, a Level 2 RT certificate doesn’t imply Level 2 UT competence, and industry-sector endorsements (welding products versus castings, for instance) matter.
