DIMENSIONAL RANGE:
Unlike most standards in this library, ISO 9606 does define a real, working dimensional range; it’s one of the essential variables the whole qualification is built on. Test on a given plate thickness and the certificate covers a band both above and below it: for example, a welder tested on 12 mm plate typically qualifies from around 3 mm up to 24 mm, following the standard’s thickness-multiplier tables (Tables 6–8, varying slightly by weld type and part). For pipe, the qualification additionally depends on outside diameter: a test on a given pipe diameter qualifies a defined range of diameters above and below it, not just the thickness. The exact multipliers differ between fillet welds, butt welds, and material parts, so the certificate’s stated range, not a general rule of thumb, is always what governs whether a welder can be assigned to a specific job without requalification.
DESCRIPTION:
This is the welder’s actual “license” : position, process, material group, filler metal, thickness and diameter ranges are all recorded on the qualification certificate, and only work falling within that qualified range can legally be assigned to that welder without requalification.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
ISO 9606 qualifications are not automatically interchangeable with AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX welder qualifications; on projects with both American and international scopes, plan for separate qualification records, because auditors will ask for both.
