Not applicable. ISO 3834 certifies a management system, not a product, so it carries no dimensional or diameter-based scope at all; it applies equally to a small-bore instrument tubing shop and a large-diameter pressure vessel fabricator. What does scale with the project is the required quality level: elementary requirements (Part 4) suit low-complexity, low-consequence work, standard requirements (Part 3) cover the majority of general fabrication, and comprehensive requirements (Part 2) apply where welding is technically demanding, safety-critical, or high-consequence, piping and pressure equipment for oil & gas and offshore typically sits in this top tier.
DESCRIPTION:
Think of it as the umbrella system standard that ties everything else in this section together. It defines three levels of quality requirement. comprehensive (Part 2), standard (Part 3), and elementary (Part 4) and specifies what a fabricator needs in place: qualified welding coordinators (per ISO 14731), qualified welders (ISO 9606), qualified procedures (ISO 15614), and a documented QA/QC system. When we are evaluating a production yard, ISO 3834 certification is one of the first things we check, because it tells you the organization has all the downstream pieces under control, not just isolated welder certificates.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
ISO 3834 by itself certifies a management system, not an individual weld. it’s frequently confused with product-specific weld acceptance criteria (ISO 5817), which is a separate document entirely.
