USED FOR:

Petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries – Materials selection and corrosion control for oil and gas production systems

Broader materials selection and corrosion-risk management for the full production system; wellhead through stabilized-product pipelines, including utility and injection lines

RELATED STANDARDS:

  • NORSOK M-001 – Materials selection
  • ISO 15156 (NACE MR0175) – Materials for H2S-containing environments
  • ASME B31.3 / ISO 13703 (and other governing design codes)
  • EEMUA Publication 194 – Guide to Materials Selection and Corrosion Control for Subsea Energy Equipment
  • NORSOK L-001 – Piping and valves

DIMENSIONAL RANGE:

Not applicable in the NPS/DN sense, this is a materials and corrosion-management standard, not a sizing code. What actually bounds its applicability is the *system boundary*: it covers pipelines, piping, and equipment from and including the wellhead through to and including pipelines for stabilized products, plus associated utility and injection systems. It explicitly excludes downhole components, which sit outside its scope regardless of size or service.

DESCRIPTION:

Where ISO 15156 is narrowly about H₂S cracking resistance, ISO 21457 is the umbrella document for corrosion risk management generally: identifying corrosion mechanisms (CO₂, erosion, MIC, galvanic, etc.), setting corrosion allowances, and deciding between carbon steel with allowance, corrosion inhibition, cladding, or CRAs. We typically use it at the front end of material selection, before drilling into service-specific standards.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

It deliberately does not provide detailed manufacturing or testing requirements; for that, you go to the relevant product standard. It was last reconfirmed in 2024, so the 2010 edition remains current
