USED FOR:
(multi-part) Specification and qualification of welding procedures
Qualifying the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) itself, through a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR), before production welding start
RELATED STANDARDS:
- ISO 3834 – Quality requirements for fusion welding
- ISO 9606 – Qualification testing of welders
- ISO 9606 – Qualification testing of welders
- ISO 15609 – Specification of welding procedures
- ISO 15610 / 15611 / 15612 / 15613 – Alternative qualification routes
- ISO/TR 15608 – Guidelines for a metallic material grouping system
- ASME Section IX (comparison, not equivalence)
DIMENSIONAL RANGE:
Like ISO 9606, this is a standard where the dimensional range is a real, load-bearing part of the qualification, not an absent parameter. Thickness range of qualification is derived from the test piece thickness itself and is often asymmetric (the lower bound can sit as low as 3 mm regardless of what was tested, per the tables in Annex B). For pipe, diameter matters independently of thickness: a butt weld tested on pipe with outside diameter greater than 25 mm typically qualifies all diameters above roughly 0.5D, and, since the 2017 edition, a pipe qualification of that kind also covers butt welds on plate. As with ISO 9606, these multipliers vary by material group, weld type, and edition, so the PQR’s stated range of qualification, not a rule of thumb, is what should be checked against the production joint.
DESCRIPTION:
Different parts cover different processes and materials (arc welding of steels, arc welding of aluminium, and so on). Essential variables — base material group per ISO 15608, welding process, filler classification, heat input, joint type — define the qualified range; exceed them and the procedure needs requalifying.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
ISO 15614 works together with ISO 15609 (specifying a WPS) and ISO 15607 (general rules) on a spec review; We check that all three are referenced consistently, since it’s a common paperwork gap for procedures to be written to one standard’s format but tested to another’s acceptance criteria.
