DIMENSIONAL RANGE:
Not applicable in the NPS/DN sense, ISO 12944 classifies environments and coating performance, not component size. The relevant “range” here is corrosivity and durability: atmospheric categories run from C1 (very low, climate-controlled indoor) up to C5 (very high, aggressive coastal/industrial), with CX sitting above C5 for offshore-specific exposure, and immersion categories running Im1 to Im4 (the latter for cathodically protected submerged structures). Durability ranges span low to very high, with “very high” systems designed to protect for 25+ years. For offshore systems under Part 9, the standard is applicable for a paint service temperature range of −20 °C to +80 °C, and qualification testing is built around that envelope
DESCRIPTION:
This is the go-to reference for coating specs on any project with exposed carbon steel. It classifies environments by corrosivity category (C1 to C5, plus offshore-specific CX and immersion categories including Im4 for cathodically protected structures), defines surface preparation grades, lists standard paint systems and expected durability, and sets out laboratory test methods for qualifying a coating system. Part 9, added later, specifically addresses offshore structures, splash zones, and cathodic protection interfaces.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Don’t confuse this with internal lining/coating standards for piping (which are typically covered separately). ISO 12944 is about external atmospheric and immersion corrosion protection of the steel structure itself.
