This is a fittings standard for stainless steel specifically, distinguishing it from ASTM A234 (carbon and low-alloy steel fittings) and ASTM A420 (low-temperature carbon and low-alloy steel fittings). ASTM A403 covers wrought austenitic stainless steel butt-welding fittings manufactured from pipe, tube, plate, or forgings by forming operations, while ASTM A182 covers forged stainless steel fittings and flanges typically used for socket-weld and threaded connections.

Design code that invokes it: ASME B31.3 and ASME B31.1 recognize ASTM A403 as an approved material specification for wrought stainless steel butt-welding fittings. Allowable stresses and design limits are established by the applicable ASME Code.
Dimensional standard that pairs with it: ASME B16.9 defines the dimensions, wall thickness relationships, center-to-end dimensions, and tolerances for butt-welding fittings. ASTM A403 itself governs material requirements and does not define fitting geometry.
GRADE / TYPE RANGE:
ASTM A403 covers wrought austenitic stainless steel grades including WP304, WP304L, WP316, WP316L, WP321, WP347, and related grades corresponding to the applicable stainless steel compositions.
The low-carbon “L” grades reduce carbon content compared with standard grades, improving resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion after welding and during long-term service exposure.
The stabilized grades (321 and 347) use titanium or niobium additions respectively to improve resistance to carbide precipitation during elevated-temperature service.
As with other austenitic stainless steel specifications, grade selection is primarily driven by corrosion resistance, chloride exposure, sensitization risk, and service temperature rather than by large differences in mechanical strength.
The WP-S and WP-W classifications identify fittings manufactured from seamless or welded starting material respectively, when applicable, and may be restricted by project specifications depending on service requirements.
DESCRIPTION:
ASTM A403 covers wrought austenitic stainless steel butt-welding fittings manufactured from suitable starting materials and formed into standard fitting configurations.
The specification defines chemical composition limits, mechanical property requirements, heat treatment conditions, and manufacturing requirements for the applicable grades and construction classes.
Heat treatment is typically solution annealing to obtain the required corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, with the exact requirements depending on the grade and product form.
Testing requirements include mechanical testing and other examinations required by the specification for the applicable fitting type. Intergranular corrosion testing and additional nondestructive examination are performed when required by supplementary requirements or purchaser specifications.
Marking requirements identify manufacturer, grade, construction class where applicable, and heat or lot traceability to ensure material identification throughout fabrication and installation.
TYPICAL INDUSTRY USE:
Specified across chemical processing, refining, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, offshore, LNG, and general process piping systems where corrosion resistance, high-temperature capability, or stainless steel construction is required.
ASTM A403 fittings are commonly used in stainless steel process piping systems manufactured according to ASME B16.9 butt-welding fitting requirements.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- We routinely see 316 supplied where 316L was specified (or the reverse assumed acceptable). The correct grade designation should always be confirmed because the lower carbon content of 316L provides improved resistance to sensitization after welding.
- The WP-S vs. WP-W distinction should be verified for critical services, since some project specifications restrict fittings to seamless construction or require additional inspection of welded starting material.
- Supplementary requirements may include additional inspection, testing, or intergranular corrosion testing depending on service conditions and project requirements. These requirements shall be explicitly identified in the purchase specification.
- NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance is not inherent to ASTM A403. For sour service applications, the selected stainless steel grade, metallurgical condition, and environmental limits shall be verified against the applicable NACE/ISO 15156 requirements.
- For welded construction classes, documentation related to the starting welded material and applicable examinations should be reviewed during quality control activities, particularly for critical pressure-containing services.
