intended for high-pressure pipeline and transmission applications. ASTM A860 is a fittings standard specifically developed for high-yield-strength pipeline applications. It covers butt-welding fittings manufactured to match the mechanical requirements of high-strength line pipe systems, where fitting properties must be compatible with the adjoining pipeline material.
This specification is different from ASTM A234, which covers carbon and low-alloy steel fittings commonly used in plant/process piping, and ASTM A420, which covers low-temperature carbon and low-alloy steel fittings.

Dimensional standard that pairs with it: ASME B16.9 defines dimensions and tolerances for standard butt-welding fittings. MSS SP-75 provides additional requirements commonly applied to high-test pipeline fittings, including dimensional and quality requirements.
GRADE / TYPE RANGE:
ASTM A860 grades are designated mainly as WPHY 42, WPHY 46, WPHY 52, WPHY 60, and WPHY 65/70, where the number corresponds approximately to the minimum yield strength requirement in ksi.
The WPHY designation is related to pipeline strength classification but is not an API 5L grade designation. Selection is based on compatibility with the adjoining line pipe grade, design pressure, operating conditions, and applicable pipeline code requirements.
Higher-strength grades achieve their mechanical properties through controlled chemistry, microalloying elements such as niobium, vanadium, and titanium, and controlled manufacturing processes rather than simply increasing carbon content.
Carbon content is generally controlled at low levels to maintain weldability and toughness, which are critical requirements for pipeline construction where field girth welding is required.
DESCRIPTION:
ASTM A860 covers wrought high-strength ferritic steel butt-welding fittings manufactured by forming operations from suitable starting materials such as pipe, plate, or forgings, in accordance with the requirements of the specification.
The standard defines chemical composition limits, mechanical property requirements including yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation, heat treatment requirements where applicable, and dimensional requirements according to the applicable fitting standard.
Impact testing requirements are specified according to the applicable grade and purchase requirements to verify toughness at the intended service temperature.
Additional nondestructive examination requirements may be specified depending on the fitting type, manufacturing method, purchaser requirements, or supplementary specifications.
Marking requirements identify manufacturer, grade, heat number, and other traceability information necessary for pipeline quality control and material verification.
TYPICAL INDUSTRY USE:
Specified mainly in high-pressure oil and gas transmission pipelines, gathering systems, offshore pipelines, and pipeline facilities where fittings must be compatible with high-strength line pipe materials.
Common applications include compressor station piping, pump station piping, pipeline tie-ins, and high-pressure transmission systems requiring high-yield-strength fittings.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- ASTM A860 fittings should not be replaced by standard ASTM A234 fittings when the pipeline design requires mechanical property matching with high-strength line pipe. The selected fitting grade should be compatible with the adjoining pipe material and the applicable design requirements.
- The WPHY grade selection shall always be verified against the actual line pipe grade, design pressure, temperature, and project specification. The WPHY designation provides a strength classification but does not automatically define equivalence with API 5L X grades.
- NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance is not inherent to ASTM A860. For sour service applications, the selected fitting grade, heat treatment condition, hardness, and environmental limits shall be verified against the applicable NACE/ISO 15156 requirements.
- Welding procedures shall be qualified according to the applicable construction code and project requirements, considering the specific fitting grade, adjoining pipe grade, and wall thickness combination.
- Because ASTM A860 fittings are specialized pipeline components, availability is generally lower than standard ASTM A234 fittings and procurement planning should consider longer manufacturing lead times and supplier qualification requirements.
