DIMENSIONAL RANGE:
ISO 3183 covers seamless and welded line pipe across a wide grade ladder, from the low-strength Grade A/A25/B up through the X-grades (X42 through X70, with X80 at the premium end), each number denoting minimum yield strength. Outside diameters run roughly from 1/2 inch for seamless and ERW product up to very large-diameter SAW pipe in the 100-inch range, with wall thickness following the schedule series shared with ASME B36.10M rather than a schedule unique to this standard. We always treat the OD and wall thickness as project-specific selections within that broad envelope rather than fixed values the standard itself mandates, and we cross-check the exact upper/lower limits against the current edition table before quoting a size outside the commonly-stocked range.
DESCRIPTION:
The ISO counterpart to API 5L, and in practice the two are frequently cross-referenced in the same material requisition. It defines product specification levels (PSL 1 and PSL 2) with PSL 2 carrying tighter chemistry, toughness, and NDT requirements; the distinction we check first on any line pipe MTR review.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Referenced directly by ISO 13623 as the primary line-pipe material standard, don’t specify pipe grade without also stating PSL level, since it materially changes acceptance testing and traceability requirements.
